New 2025 Carbonization Workshops

Carbonization Firing Techniques

In this 2-day workshop, we will explore multiple beautiful decorative finishes achieved through carbonization and smoke firing techniques. The primary technique covered will be sawdust firing using Tim’s unique slip resist application and decorating with botanicals, tape, and string. Workshop offerings will also include various other carbonization techniques including horsehair, obvara, fuming, and painting with smoke. This  is a fabulous workshop for curious minds and those drawn to impressionistic, unique decorative finishes!

Each participant may bring up to 20 pieces, depending on size, for a maximum of ______. For a smooth, shiny finish, work may be burnished or polished with Terra Sig. Pieces may be hand built or wheel thrown. We recommend using a smooth white high-fire stoneware for all pieces. It is best not to use a clay with grog or earthenware. CCW has a variety of clays for sale that would be recommended.
