INTENSIVE EXPLORATION IN WOOD FIRING  

Preparation and firing of both a

Climbing Train Kiln and a Rock Creek Naborigama

Description:  This  exciting and highly unusual  firing workshop offers participants the opportunity to fire in both CCW’s wood kilns simultaneously.  Extensive and detailed instruction in glazing, wadding, loading, placement and firing techniques for both a Rock Creek Naborigama and CCW’S unique Climbing Train Kiln.The second chamber of the Naborigama is fired as a soda chamber.The CCW staff and crew have experience in firing our  wood kilns well over 300 times. Each participant will be given extraordinarily  generous templates of volume for each kiln, with the possibility of firing  over 100 pieces per participant .

 60% of these wares should be planned to be placed in the 

100 cubic foot Train Kiln, while 40% will be placed into the Naborigama.

Participants of all skill levels are welcome.

 

Each participant will be allotted two 24"x24" x12"  templates if they choose. Filling of these templates is not expected or 

required.

Description: This is a rare opportunity to focus on the primitive and spectacular varied results found in smoke fired pottery. Numerous carbonization techniques will be covered including, sawdust firing, fuming, horse hair firing, feather firing, saggar carbon firing, Candy and Naked Raku. Extensive instruction will be given in the uses of Terra Sig. CCW has a wonderful collection of colored Terra Sig.

DYNAMIC SAGGAR FIRED POTTERY

Description:  This is an exceptionally unusual and intensive two and a half day hands-on workshop ,covering in depth, variations on saggar firing (reduction, oxidation, clay saggars, foil saggars and paper clay saggars).  Application of terra sig and burnishing techniques will also be covered.  Participants are encouraged to bring as many as 30 moderately sized pots,  20 of these pots should be sigged or burnished and bisqued prior to the workshop. The remaining pots will be sigged at CCW with colored sigillatas. Tim’s firing techniques are very specific to achieve particular and desired results. A wealth of knowledge and information will be shared in this workshop and will most certainly bring terrific results. The use of numerous sulfates and chlorides will be covered.  Day one will entail extensive demos and lectures on the use of Terra Sig, polishing bone dry wares, and burnishing . These wares would then be bisque fire overnight in preparation for day two, when we will explore a variety of alternative firing techniques. The last day will cover the unloading of numerous kilns, cleaning and polishing the newly-fired wares and a critique of our results.

WHEEL THROWING CLINIC

Tuition: $250.00 clay extra, CCW clay required

Description: This two-day hands on workshop is intended for the advanced beginner and intermediate potter to solve their individual struggles with different forms and throwing techniques. This is not open to the inexperienced beginner.  A basic understanding of throwing on the potters wheel is a prerequisite . Extensive demos, lectures and hands-on sessions will be offered while showing techniques in texturing, altering, covered containers and compound forms.  Participants will leave with a huge amount of information to assist them in the accomplishment of their personal goals.

THE RAKU JOURNEY

Description: 

This extraordinary workshop will offer two and 1/2 days of exciting hands-on firings covering a myriad of techniques using a Raku kiln. Firings and subjects that will be covered are Raku glazed wares, Candy Raku, Naked Raku, Obvara, and

numerous carbonization techniques, i.e. horsehair, feathers, and plant matter. Tim has several Raku glazes and coloring techniques rarely found in workshops.

 

Application of terra sig and burnishing will be extensively covered. These wares will be Bisque overnight.

 

Students are encouraged to bring 30 moderately-sized pots, 20 of them bisque ware, the others bone dry. Tim’s firing techniques are very specific to achieve particular and desired results. A wealth of knowledge and information will be shared in this workshop and will most certainly bring terrific results.
