2025 Saggar Firing Workshops

Exploration in Saggar Firing

Immerse yourself into the world of extraordinarily beautiful firing techniques in our Saggar Firing Workshops!

This workshop invites you to explore the fascinating process of firing ceramics within sealed vessels (saggars), where organic matter pickled in material salts create mesmerizing patterns and hues. Led by saggar firing expert Tim Scull and his crew, this workshop promises a journey of explosive discovery and creativity backed by thirty years of experience.

In this 2.5-day workshop, we will cover two varieties of Saggar firing in our new kiln. First; your work, wrapped inside aluminum foil as a saggar, will be fired in an oxidation atmosphere. Second, we will fire in reduction using Clam Shell-style saggars, which involves placing wares in large covered containers full of pickled organic mater. Both techniques produce wonderful patterns full of color.

Each participant may bring up to four cubic feet of volume of work, preferably burnished or polished with Terra Sig. Pieces may be hand built or wheel thrown. We recommend using a smooth white high-fire stoneware for all pieces. It is best not to use a clay with grog or earthenware. CCW has a variety of clays for sale that would be recommended.
